How it all started.
How I Got Into Photography: From YouTube to New York Fashion Week
If you've ever wondered how photographers get their start, I thought I’d share my own journey—from experimenting with light and composition as a teenager to shooting at New York Fashion Week. It’s been a wild ride, and I’m just getting started.
It All Started With YouTube
My love for photography began during my teenage years. Like many creators of my generation, I was obsessed with YouTube. I spent countless hours watching tutorials and content that taught me about light, composition, framing, and what looks good to the human eye. It wasn’t just a passing hobby—I actually ran a pretty popular YouTube channel back then, which gave me early experience in visual storytelling.
Documenting Adventures With a Phone
As I moved into young adulthood, I got deeply into hiking, rock climbing, and mountaineering. Nature became my playground and, naturally, I started documenting my outdoor adventures using just my phone. That experience taught me how to capture fleeting moments and translate stories into still images. It also deepened my love for photography as a medium for expression.
Rediscovering Photography in College
Fast forward a few years, and I found myself pursuing a second degree—this time in the sciences. I needed an art elective, and digital photography felt like the perfect fit. That course helped reinforce what I already knew, while filling in important foundational gaps. I worked on a variety of projects, from landscapes and portraits to still life and cinematic-style images. It was a turning point—it reignited my passion in a big way.
Getting Hands-On With a DSLR
About a year ago, I borrowed my mom’s Canon DSLR. I believe it was an 8 or 10-megapixel camera—nothing fancy by today’s standards, but it was a game-changer for me. I started shooting anything and everything: pets, flowers, landscapes, and eventually, people. I began working with models, exploring portrait photography, and truly fell in love with the process of capturing people in creative ways.
Shooting at New York Fashion Week
Then, last February, something incredible happened—I had the opportunity to photograph at New York Fashion Week. That experience completely blew me away. I connected with designers, models, and fellow photographers, and it showed me the kind of community and creativity that exists in the fashion world. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to pursue fashion photography seriously.
Where I’m Headed Next
Today, I’m fully immersed in the world of photography. I shoot regularly, collaborate with amazing talent, and continue to push myself creatively. My goal is to one day turn this into a full-time career. Until then, I’m soaking up every experience and growing with every shoot.
